Brick: To Paint Or Not To Paint?

You might be seeing it crop up throughout your neighbourhood or all over your Instagram feed - painted brick is definitely a hot trend at the minute. But should you hop on the bandwagon? Or should you let this wave pass you by? Here's our take on whether or not you should paint your brick house.

BENEFITS OF PAINTING BRICK

Boosts Curb Appeal

Slate grey, black or even a classic white can upgrade your home's curb appeal and by extension its value. But how do you know which colour is right for your home? It's important to look for contrast in your design. For example, white painted wood siding goes beautifully with black metal windows, copper downspouts and a seamed metal roof.

If you don't paint your brick, you have to work really hard to illustrate the contrast in your home - features such as doors, windows and landscaping might not pop the way they would if you painted your brick.

Provides Protection From The Elements

When your brick house is properly updated with new paint, the paint will act as a sealant to protect your home from precipitation and other seasonal weather changes. Paint can also help reduce fading and deterioration of your home's exterior.

Easy To Maintain

Brick is naturally porous, so when left unpainted, dirt and debris can become trapped and difficult to clear away. Painted brick provides a smooth surface that is much easier to clean with occasional power washing.

DRAWBACKS TO PAINTING BRICK

Painted Brick Is Permanent

Many materials in the world of design are flexible and reusable - able to be sanded down and repainted or refinished over time. Unfortunately, this is not the case with painted brick. Once you paint your brick, it is extremely difficult and costly to remove the paint. You can change the colour as often as you like, but it is not worth it to remove the paint to go back to the original brick.

Moisture Can Cause Paint To Chip

Most home exteriors can attract moisture, but this is especially true of painted brick that is closest to the ground. To prevent this, simply repaint your home's exterior every 7-10 years. Spot touch ups can also help your home while keep it looking fresh.

You May Need To Clean Painted Brick More

On the one hand, painted brick is easy to clean. It's more weather resistant than other materials. However, you will likely need to clean it more often than other materials as it can show dirt more (especially if you are painting your house a light colour such as white). Having an occasional power wash can help your brick look crisp and clean and won't break the bank while doing it!

Do you have a brick home? Have you thought about painting it? We hope this list of pros and cons will help you in determining whether or not painting brick is the right decision for you and your home
